Get through with Less Stress this Christmas

Christmas is the time of year for joy and cheer. But lurking underneath the joy and cheer Ayurveda Christmascan be stress and depression especially this year with the recession.  How can we move through Christmas and not feel stressed or depressed with all that we hear about the new budget and our current state of economics?  Luckily, I have some tips that, though simple, could keep you out of the blues.

  • Stop yourself from reaching for that glass of wine or alcoholic drink.  I know, most of us think that alcohol will take the edge off a bad day and relax us, but in fact, it tends to make a situation worse.  Alcohol lowers our resolves and keeps us in a negative state of mind, especially the day after we’ve had a drink.  If you want to stay positive then thinking twice about a drink will help your mood from going up and down like a yo-yo.
  • Watch the mind chatter.  Yes, that little voice in your head is part of your problem.  Every time you catch yourself saying something negative about yourself or someone else, replace it with a positive thought.  Don’t leave those negative thoughts out their because they will find their way back to you only keeping you in a negative cycle.
  • Limit your intake of news.  Most of us are watching the news, reading the news and listening to the news throughout the day.  Make a commitment to switch one of those off and enjoy the silence or take up a new hobby.  By listening to the news you are feeding the negative thoughts leading you to more stress and depression.

Those are my tips for today.  Just making those 3 simple changes will change a lot.  If you find yourself feeling stressed and depressed seek out help or ways to release these feelings.  Do something nice for yourself without feeling guilty about it.  Ultimately, the only way to change is to give a little love to yourself.  So this Christmas de-stress by making those 3 simple, easy changes and feel the difference.

6 Tips for Improving Sleep

Ayurveda views sleep as one of the most important aspects in a person’s health.  If sleep isn’t adequate then a person can become depleted working on very little reserves and opening themselves up to a host of health issues.  Remember that every body is different and the amount of sleep needed varies with each individual.  So much research has been done on sleep but I wanted to give you my quick tips for those who suffer from insomnia.

In general, those who suffer from a lot of air in their bodies are the most likely to have insomnia.  Air in your body shows up through constipation, dry skin, scattered mind, and excessive gas or wind.  The following suggestions are geared toward reducing the air in your body to make you feel more grounded and balanced before bed.

My 6 Tips for Improving Sleep:

  1. Oil the top of your head and the bottom of your feet with sunflower or coconut oil.  Oil is a way of grounding extra energy in the body.  When we travel, spend a lot of time outdoors in the wind or too much time in the sun we increase an energy in our body that can keep us from sleeping.  Oil helps stop the extra energy and brings a grounding calmness to the body.
  2. Have a bedtime routine.  Always go to bed at a certain time and give yourself a routine before bed.  Your routine could include taking a bath, going for a short walk, reading a light book or meditating.  This allows the body to know that you are getting ready to go to bed and it will start responding by getting tired before you get to bed.
  3. Give yourself time to reflect on the day before going to bed.  A lot of us are staying awake because we are going over everything that happened during the day as we are lying in bed.  Once you go to bed don’t spend time thinking.  Give yourself reflection time before you decide to go to bed so you don’t feel like you need to do it during.
  4. Journaling before bed allows whatever is in your head to come out before you try to get some shuteye.  You may want to journal things you want to make sure you do tomorrow, or you can write about how great your day went.  The key is that once you get to bed if there is still anything going around in your head you need to get it out on paper so your mind can stop thinking about it.
  5. Warm milk and nutmeg.  Warm milk induces a sound sleep and the nutmeg is a natural muscle relaxant that will help the body relax.  Just don’t use too much nutmeg as it will make you feel a bit heavy in the morning if you do.  Warm milk and nutmeg before bed is a natural and nice way to relax.
  6. Avoid stimulating activities like watching television, doing yoga or any other form of exercise, drinking coffee, tea or soda.  All of these things will increase the energy in your body and make you stay awake.

Give 1 or all of my suggestions a try.  If you do all 6 you are sure to have improved your sleep.  If you don’t feel any improvement then you may need more help.  Insomnia is a sign that your body is out of balance.  Especially if you have been suffering from insomnia for any length of time you could need a lot more than what I have recommended here.  If you are interested in treating your insomnia naturally you can email me at edie@ayurvedaireland.ie and we can set up an appointment over the internet.

Get Your Bowels Moving

Before I get to the bulk of my article I want to say that my point of view is the result of my training in Ayurveda and through my own experience.  It is not intended to be used as a diagnosis or to replace a visit with your GP.  If you have concerns about your bowel movements I recommend you visit your GP for a full exam.

Are you having days when you don’t have a movement?  Do those days sometimes stretch into a week at times?  If so then I want to talk to you.

What does it mean if you miss a bowel movement? If you miss having a bowel movement on the very rare occasion I wouldn’t put any thought into it.  But, if you miss having a bowel movement 1-2 times per month and/or it seems to be increasing in how many days you miss then you should really start paying attention.  Also, if you can’t have a bowel movement without the use of a laxative or caffeine then you should also pay attention to this article.  I cannot say enough how important it is that your bowels move on their own every single day.

I used to suffer from constipation (less than 1 bowel movement per day) and I really didn’t think much of it.  I also didn’t know how it was connected to my health and so didn’t see any importance of making sure my bowels were moving.  When I was quit young I suffered from stiff and sore joints, scattered, drifty mind and from extreme mood swings.  What I learned later is that all of these conditions clear up once the bowels move.  Now, some people have regular bowel movements and they still suffer from some of the above symptoms, and if that is you then your body is different, and there is another reason specific for you.  But, if you are not having regular movements AND you have health issues, then moving and getting the bowels in good health will help clear up a lot of your health conditions.

How do I get my bowels moving naturally?

This is the big question.  I will give you some simple, natural ways to get your bowel health back on track, but remember, depending on how long the constipation has been going on, it may take a bit of time to reverse and none of my suggestions include taking supplements.  The following suggestions are for those who aren’t obese.  If you are obese or have a large amount of extra weight then please skip suggestion 1-4 and go straight to suggestions 5-7.

  1. Increase the amount of oil in your diet.  Your bowels aren’t moving because you are dried out.  You can replace the dryness by adding good, natural oils to your meals.  This includes eating foods that naturally have oil in them such as avocados, nuts and seeds.  For some people they could be eating these foods but still not having regular movements and to that I would say you still need more oil.
  2. Avoid dry foods.  Dry foods require more moisture to digest which means it takes it from your body.  Eat foods that are naturally moist and or cooked but not dry.  The worse foods to eat if your bowels aren’t moving are rice cakes, ryvita, popcorn, dried fruits, granola and museli to name a few.
  3. Oil your skin.  If your skin is dry this is a good indicator that internally you are dry and oiling the skin will help bring moisture from the outside in.  Sunflower is a safe oil to put on the outside of your skin.  Don’t worry about pimples or skin eruptions, basically if the oil is of good quality it will be absorbed by the skin and used in the body.
  4. Avoid raw food.  If your diet is based mostly of raw foods and you still aren’t having a bowel movement then you should come off the raw food until the bowels are moving again and then start with the raw food in the summer.  It takes a certain enzyme to digest raw food which is completely different than the enzyme we need to break down cooked foods.  During the warmer time of the year we have an easier time adjusting our diets to raw.  Make sure you educate yourself about how to eat healthy if you do want to stay on your raw diet.  You should be having regular full movements if you do eat raw foods and if you are missing bowel movements then I strongly suggest you seek advise or stop and get digestion back on track before you proceed.

There is yet another category of us who are very heavy and aren’t having regular movements.  Here are my suggestion for you.

  1. Give your body a cleanse.  If you are heavy and have never cleansed your body then my suggestion is that you do.  Cleansing requires some will power and so asking a friend or getting yourself a health coach would be recommended.  You need to have someone you are accountable to in order for the cleanse to work.  There are a few ways of cleaning the body:
    1. Juice fasting: decide to only drink juice (that you make yourself) for a certain number of days.  In the beginning you may want to try 1 or 2 days and then once you know you can do it you may want to increase it to a 5 day juice fast.  I suggest you juice all organic fresh fruits and vegetables for your fast
    2. Fasting: I know this isn’t going to be a popular choice, but fasting once a week has been proven to improve any health condition.  Choose 1 day a week where you will drink only water and eat nothing solid.  This will allow your body a break.  Choose the same day every week to make it simple.
  2. Avoid bread, pasta and cereal.  This is high on my list of getting the bowels moving again.  These foods tend to be heavy and create stagnation in the body and make you put on weight.  We become addicted to the simple carbohydrate “highs” but what happens is after the high we have a very deep low and energy plummets.  Avoid this by replacing your bread, pasta or cereal with whole grains.
  3. Increase whole grains in your diet.  Whole grains are complex carbohydrates that give us energy over time and are much more efficient fuel to burn.  Whole grains include rice, quinoa, barley, millet, amaranth and oats.  Yes, I said rice and I do mean white rice, but what I don’t mean is Uncle Bens or a quick cooking rice.  Rice only needs about 20 minutes to cook and is one of the simplest food items to digest.

Ok, there are my top 7 ways to get your bowels moving naturally.  Remember that we are all individual and the best results will be if you are working one on one with a health coach. If you have questions or comments please feel comfortable in leaving them here. Also, if you would like health coaching then you can find me at www.healthcoachingwithedie.com. I coach online so it doesn’t matter where you are in the world, but you do need to speak English. Digestion

Do you suffer from IBS, gas/wind, constipation, acid reflux, heartburn, sluggish digestion, low energy or bloating?  If you answered yes to any condition just stated then you need to read this article.

But, before I get into the bulk of this article I want you to understand what happens when you let your digestion stay bad for any length of time.  I will start with a little story about gas/wind.  Gas/wind is the first sign that you are not digesting your food properly.  However, it is normal and natural to pass gas in the morning upon awakening and with the first morning stool.  Any time after that is when you know your digestion is not good.  When gas/wind occurs throughout your day and does for any length of time then the air (which is the gas) moves deeper into the tissue and generally goes into the joints.  Your joints will start to pop and there will be pain in some of them.  Then, if you still don’t take care of the gas it will move even deeper into the nervous system and create tremors, restlessness and forgetfulness.  In old age you will be at a higher risk of getting conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.  These are both long term air in the system that was not taken care of.

Now that you have a good idea of what can happen to your body if you have gas/wind lets look at other habits that lead to poor digestion.

Here are the most common reason’s why we don’t digest our food and ways to start digesting again.

Chew your food.  If you don’t chew your food until it is of even consistency (there is no magic number of times) you will see food particles in the stool and you will be leaving the stomach to do all the digesting (which is why you see food particles in the stool).  Things that pull us away from chewing enough are; talking, watching television, work, computer, and reading.  If your digestion is not good and you know you do one or more of the things that lead to poor digestion then my suggestion is that you stop and put yourself in a quiet environment where all you will be doing is eating.  Nothing else, just eating.

Eat when you are hungry. If you aren’t hungry when you eat you are asking the body to come up with enzymes to digest the food you are putting in that are not there.  I don’t care how much you want to eat, if you are not hungry you will not digest your food.  This happens when you are scheduled for a lunch break and you aren’t hungry, but you think you might be hungry later so you eat.  You will get gas/wind from doing this and your health will suffer.

Food combining. Food combining can contribute to poor digestion because certain food items should not be eaten together.  A real common combination that a lot of people do is raw food with cooked food.  It takes a certain enzyme to digest raw food and a whole different enzyme to digest cooked food.  When your digestion is not good and you eat both raw and cooked foods together you are creating problems for your body especially when it’s cold outside.  In order for our bodies to digest raw food we need to cultivate and produce an enzyme that is not easy to cultivate if you are living in a cold climate.  In warmer climates, raw foods are generally not an issue for most people, but cold climates require foods to be cooked in order to digest it properly.  This includes fruits.  Having a desert of fruit after a cooked meal will only create gas.  This is because of the difference in enzymes.  Fruit should be eaten between meals to allow for proper digestion and never, ever with a meal (unless you have cooked it).

Another combination of foods that don’t do well together are proteins with proteins or carbohydrates with carbohydrates.  You only need one of each in a meal.  You will experience heaviness if you put two proteins together and/or two carbohydrates together in the same meal.  Proteins are any meat item including fish and vegetable proteins such as beans and lentils and dairy that includes cheese and milk.  Make sure you only have one of these items in your meal.  Proteins are the heaviest food items to digest and eating one in a meal should be more than enough.

Two carbohydrates together will also be hard for the body to digest.  A complex carbohydrate is a grain in it’s whole form (white rice, brown rice, oats, quinoa, barley, millet, amaranth).  A simple carbohydrate includes bread, pasta, cereal or couscous.  Combining any of these carbs together will create problems in the body.  Again, you only need one in your meal and if digestion is a problem then I suggest you stick to your complex carbohydrate.

Clearing up any digestive problem will help your body absorb the nutrients from the food and leave you feeling good.  You should be getting energy from your meals, not heaviness.  Simplify your diet if everything you eat seems to create problems for you and seek out the advise of a health coach to support you and give you advise while you make changes to your diet.  Digestive problems need not be something you have to struggle with your whole life.  They can be gone within days when you are diligent about getting your health back on track.

Fertility

Fertility, according to Ayurveda, is not just about the health of the egg and sperm but also the woman’s reproductive tissue (shukra) and her ojas (constitutional strength).  Envision a woman’s womb like a nest.  If the nest is too dry, undernourished, or out of balance an egg cannot grow. In order for conditions to be “just right” she needs to have her body strong and ready to carry a life.  A nest or womb that is ready to receive an egg to grow needs to be moist, fertile, warm and nourished.  The monthly cycle of a woman is a good indicator to the quality of the womb and its ability to carry a life.

Indicators that show the womb is ready to receive and grow a baby are:

  • Monthly cycle is regular with adequate amount of blood flow
  • Ovulation discharge is present and is moist and sticky
  • There is little to no mood swings or discomfort before or during monthly cycle
  • The woman’s body has an adequate amount of fat (not too much, but not under weight)

Remember that once you conceive your body will take from you in order to nourish and grow the body of the baby.  If you don’t have enough to supply yourself and the baby then you will find depletion in your own tissue while the baby will receive all it needs.  This depletion can lead to depression after birth and possible health issues in the mother.

Ayurveda teaches that the food you give your body feeds 7 different layers of tissue (dhatus*).  Once food has been consumed the first layer of tissue (rasa dhatu*) is fed and if the quality and quantity is there and digestion is good then the second layer (rakta dhatu*) is fed and so on until the 7th and final tissue is fed which is the reproductive tissue (shukra dhatu*).  Also, when the body is under a lot of stress the first tissue that gets depleted is the 7th tissue (shukra dhatu*) or the reproductive tissue and then the 6th tissue (majja dhatu) and so on.  That is why it is very important that the mother, in preparation to conceiving, eat foods that are best for her body type so all of the 7 tissues (dhatus*) get fed.

7 ways you can increase your chances of conceiving:

  1. Avoid stressful situations: When women put themselves in stressful situations or conditions they are depleting the reproductive tissue.  Our bodies are very wise.  Women can only carry a baby if the situation and circumstances around them make them feel comfortable and safe.  Stress is an indicator that things are not safe.  When things are not safe the blood stops flowing to the reproductive tissue and feeds only those vital organs to maintain life.  On the other hand, when the body is in a time of growth and prosperity, comfort and the feeling of being safe prevail and the reproductive tissue has adequate blood flow and so is able to carry and maintain a life.
  2. Eat foods that are nourishing for you: If you know your bodies constitution, according to Ayurvedic principles, then the foods you are eating will be most balancing for you and will nourish and support the growth of a fetus.  If you don’t know your individual constitution and are not good about listening to your bodies needs then you could be giving your body foods that are depleting.  Not all “health foods” are healthy for everyone.
  3. Avoid black tea and coffee (these deplete the system):  Black tea and coffee are dieretics and deplete the body through dehydration.  This can be a big issue if your dominate constitution is Vata.  Replace black tea and coffee with warm water or herbal teas.  Herbal teas that are nourishing for the reproductive tissue are red raspberry and strawberry leaves, chamomile, nettles, rose and licorice.
  4. Make sure you get adequate amounts of healthy oil in your diet:  Healthy oil such as extra virgin olive oil, flaxseed or linseed oil, ghee, sesame and sunflower oils keep the hormones balanced and the tissue nourished.  An inadequate amount of oil can show up as insomnia, constipation, dry skin, over active mind, twitches and tremours.
  5. Learn to let go without feeling you have to be in control of everything:  Letting go can literally help you to feel lighter.  The more you try to hold on or make something happen that is showing you resistance the more stress you are putting on your body.  When you let go you start to go with the flow of life and everything starts to happen without effort.
  6. Stop smoking: Smoking not only is bad for your health, but it dries out the body and leaves toxins in the system.  Remember that your baby will receive all that it needs and what you have available, good or bad.  Those toxins that you inhale through smoking will also go into the growth of your baby.  Make sure that if you do smoke or if you find yourself pregnant then please stop during the pregnancy.
  7. Get outside and walk daily:  Walking is a great way to get your exercise and safe to do through out the pregnancy.  Walking keeps your muscles loose and gets the metabolism moving.  If you can get out for a walk daily you will see your energy stay up and you feel good through your whole day.  In addition, connecting with fresh air and getting outside does wonders on your outlook and state of mind.  All for the positive.

*Dhatu is the Sanskrit term for tissue.  There are 7 dhatus that make up the physical bodies health.  The 7 dhatus are:

  • Rasa Dhatu- plasma
  • Rakta Dhatu- blood
  • Mamsa Dhatu- muscle
  • Meda Dhatu- fat
  • Asthi Dhatu- bone
  • Majja Dhatu- bone marrow or nervous system
  • Shukra Dhatu- reproductive tissue
